On November 11th, 2015, my perfectly healthy wife, Susan, was diagnosed with stage-2 breast cancer. She was three months pregnant. Although her prognosis was always very positive, the thought of treating a major illness during pregnancy was daunting. Susan endured a lumpectomy, axillary lymph node dissection (resulting in the removal of 15 lymph nodes), and chemotherapy, all while carrying her first, and likely only, child. Thankfully, she gave birth to Alina; a happy and healthy little girl who is beautiful, hilarious, and brings us joy every day. Susan has been healthy and strong as well since completing radiation treatments shortly after giving birth.
We believe that the pregnancy was partly responsible for finding the Cancer which makes Alina a hero. The way in which Susan navigated this absolutely frightening road with dignity, grace, and stubborn resolve makes her a Superhero. I would be lying if I said that the time since her diagnosis has not been difficult, stressful, joyous, and tearful. The virtual roller coaster keeps changing before our eyes, but we ride it together and I am so proud to have a wife who is a hero to some and an inspiration to many, including myself.
